Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Summer Lunch Program is gearing up to start again. The first lunch served is scheduled to be June 1st — or the first weekday after the last day of school at Sheldon. The meals are served from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on weekdays at the Sheldon United Methodist Church.
We had a chance to visit with Katricia Meendering who is in charge of the program. She tells us that the program receives no government support. She tells us why.
She says the summer lunch program depends on the generosity of others.
They have applied for and have received several grants and are looking for more. Meendering asks that if you know of any grants they might attempt to get, let them know.
She says they have no requirements for people to attend and have a meal.
Meendering tells us that sometimes they also have an opportunity to help kids on the weekends.
She says they could use volunteers. She encourages you to call her at the United Methodist Church or just show up. They can always use extra help, whether it’s prep for that day, prep for the next day, clean up, or one of several other opportunities.
She tells us they try to live by the golden rule, “Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.”
Meendering says that looking toward the future, they’d like to work on being able to provide transportation for any children to the meal and they have an eye toward expansion. She says you can call them for more information at 712-324-4894.
