Knowledge Nugget:

A few years ago Harper’s magazine had a fascinating story about a women named Joan R. Ginther, known in the press as the “luckiest woman in the world.”

To earn that label, Ginther won the lottery four times and she didn’t win no measly $20 and $30 payouts either. She hit multiple million dollar payouts each time.

First in 1993 she won $5.4 million, in 2006 she won $2 million, then two years later $3 million. Then, finally, in the spring of 2010 she hit the $10 million jackpot.

The odds of this? One in 18 septillion. To put this into perspective, there are 3.2 septillion grains of sand on Earth. A person with Ginther’s kind of luck would only happen once every quadrillion years.

‘Tis the season to test toilets at NFL and major college football stadiums where operators are gearing up to handle the ultimate halftime rush.

While annual preseason prep typically involves facility crews inspecting water pressure, sensors and valves zone-by-zone, the real spectacle happens before a venue opens for the very first time.

New arenas host a synchronized “Super Flush”, recruiting hundreds of volunteers to flush thousands of toilets simultaneously to stress-test the building’s main plumbing lines.

Knowledge Nugget:

If you’re welcoming guests into your home, a study examining the modern-day rules of hosting pinpointed the decision-making window and found that just under 20 minutes is when guests have already made up their minds.

The research highlighted the importance of great snacks, food and drinks in forming this impression – guests expect to be offered a drink in under eight minutes and a snack in under 10.

And if food isn’t available, then hosts are taking a big risk. 68 percent say an event is less successful when there isn’t food to eat. Guests are also impressed with good music, good conversations, the type of food/snacks served and inviting the right combination of people.

Foodie Friday:

It’s National Cotton Candy Day!

The origins of cotton candy trace back to the 18th century. The first documented mention of a spun sugar treat appeared in a recipe from the 1730s. It wasn’t, however, until the early 19th century that sugar spinning began to take form as we know it today.

Most of it was hand-spun until 1897 when the first commercially successful cotton candy machine was developed by William Morrison and John C. Wharton. Their invention was the first electrically powered machine that could spin sugar into strands, creating the fluffy confection we know today.

Knowledge Nugget:

Scotland’s national animal is the unicorn!

This mythical white horse with a single horn has been a symbol of power, purity and freedom in Scottish folklore and heraldry for centuries.

The reason for it being the national animal is Celts saw the unicorn as a symbol of innocence, healing and majestic strength. Plus, King Robert I added unicorns to the royal Scottish coat of arms in the 1300s.

It’s almost impossible to get too much sugar from fresh fruit.

Fresh fruit contains a lot of fiber and water, which slows down your digestion and makes you feel full.
