Wings and Wetlands Festival

Date posted - April 29, 2015

swanO’Brien County Conservation is planning a great line-up of events to celebrate the annual multi-county Wings and Wetlands Festival.  O’Brien County along with five other counties has celebrated the arrival of spring with a variety of events for the past 20 years!

This year the fun begins on Thursday, May 7 at 6:00 p.m.  Participants should meet at the Mill Creek Lodge near Paullina to kick off the weekend with a reason to “Trumpet the Cause for Wetlands”.  You won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn more about trumpeter swans and the tremendously successful restoration program in Iowa.  A live juvenile swan will be present at the program.  Participants will have the chance to touch and learn more about these majestic birds.

On Saturday, May 9, kick off your day with “Breakfast for the Birds.”  Meet at the Prairie Heritage Center at 7:30 a.m. for rolls and coffee.  After breakfast, hit the birding trail.  A hike at the center is planned; then participants will carpool to Wanata State Park in Peterson for more bird viewing.  Bird species found throughout the weekend will be tallied as part of the Wings and Wetlands Birdathon.  Consider supporting birding in Northwest Iowa by taking part in the fundraising opportunity or just enjoy a morning of spectacular birding!

At 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, meet at the Prairie Heritage Center for more spring fun.  Participants will carpool to a nearby woodland, wetland and prairie in search of spring color and sound as we look for birds, flowers and frogs.

Join in one or all of these events in O’Brien County.  Need to know more?  Contact the O’Brien County Conservation Board at 712-295-7200.
