Cause of Ditch Fire Uncertain

Alvord, Iowa — It could have been worse. That was the response of Alvord Fire Chief Shawn Bosler in regard to a ditch fire to which firefighters were paged on Saturday evening.

The chief reports that they were called about 5:45 p.m. to the report of a ditch fire near A42 and Elmwood Avenue, about three miles south of Alvord. The chief says when they arrived they found about 100 feet of the ditch on fire. He says they made short work of extinguishing it, and only used minimal water to do so.

However, Bosler says the cause of the fire is unknown. He says they didn’t meet or talk to anyone at the scene of the fire, so they don’t know if it was accidental or if someone started the fire on purpose for some reason.

He says six firefighters responded to the fire call. No injuries or any other damage was reported.
