Sheldon Woman Sentenced In Assault Case

Primghar, Iowa — A Sheldon woman originally charged with a class B felony crime has been sentenced after pleading guilty to lesser assault charges.

Sheldon Police officers initially charged 20-year old Kathryn Carroll with 1st Degree Burglary, a class B felony, and a misdemeanor count of Assault Causing Bodily Injury following her arrest last summer in Sheldon.

Sheldon police say the charges against Carroll stemmed from their investigation, which showed that Carroll attempted to enter an apartment on May 8th, 2017, and was shouting at the apartment’s female resident to let her in. Police say when the resident refused, Carroll allegedly tore the screen off the entry door, and reached inside, unlocking the door. Police department officials say Carroll then assaulted the female resident, leaving bruises and red marks.

O’Brien County Attorney Micah Schreurs says that when he reviewed the circumstances of the case, based on the ability to acquire a conviction, and the significant loss of rights for the rest of her life if Carroll were to actually be convicted of a class B felony, he didn’t think that the charge of First Degree Burglary was appropriate, so the only formal charge was assault causing bodily injury.

In the plea agreement, Carroll pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a 30-day jail term, a suspended 30-day jail term, a $315 fine, and one year of probation.
