Sibley Man Taken To Hospital After Hitting Garbage Truck

Sibley, Iowa — A Sibley man was taken to the hospital in the aftermath of a two-vehicle crash Friday morning (February 1st) in Sibley.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the accident took place about 8:00 Friday morning when 60-year old David E. Kleinwolterink of Sibley was eastbound on 2nd Street in a 2012 Chevrolet Volt. Deputies say 61-year old Verlyn Jeffrey Smidt of Sibley was stopped for the northbound stop sign at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 2nd Street in a City of Sibley 2019 Peterbilt garbage truck. Smidt told deputies he proceeded into the intersection without seeing the Kleinwolterink car, which struck the truck broadside.

Authorities say Kleinwolterink was transported to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley. Deputies say Smidt was uninjured, and ticketed for Failure to Yield Upon Entering a Through Highway.

Damage to the garbage truck was estimated at $5-thousand, while Kleinwolterink’s Chevy sustained an estimated $12-thousand in damage.
