West Bend Man Injured In Crash Near Sutherland

Sutherland, Iowa — A West Bend man was injured after losing control of his pickup northeast of Sutherland shortly after noon on Sunday.

O’Brien County authorities say they were notified of the crash about 12:15 Sunday afternoon.  They say the mishap took place when a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup, driven by 30-year old Trent Banwart, of West Bend, was eastbound on Highway 10.  Deputies say when Banwart’s truck entered the curve east of Yew Avenue, it left the roadway to the right.  Banwart reportedly over-corrected, causing the pickup to enter the north ditch, where it overturned, striking a utility pole and damaging some fence, before coming to rest on it’s wheels in a pasture.

Deputies say Banwart was transported to the Spencer Municipal Hospital by the Peterson Ambulance with what are described as serious injuries.

Banwart’s pickup was estimated to be a total loss.  Damage to the utility pole, owned by MidAmerican Energy, is estimated at $3-thousand dollars, while damage to the fence, owned by Jerry Bibler, was estimated at $250.

Authorities say Banwart was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
