Ground Is Broken For Event Center

Event CenterSheldon, Iowa — A large crowd was on hand this (Thursday) morning for the official groundbreaking for Sheldon’s Event Center Project, located in the Sheldon Crossing area of eastern Sheldon.

Sheldon City Manager Scott Wynja told the crowd that it took a great team effort to make the project a reality.

Sheldon Mayor Katricia Meendering thanked those involved in moving the project forward, and called seeing it come to fruition “inspiring”.

The City has received numerous donations and pledges toward the event center, including a half-million dollar pledge from the Arlan Van Wyk family, and another half-millon dollar pledge for construction and operating costs from Sanford Sheldon, with Dave Van Wyk, along with Rick Nordahl of Sanford Sheldon, sharing their thoughts.

State Senator Randy Feenstra talked about the $840-thousand Vision Iowa Grant, which the City of Sheldon was awarded in March, to go toward construction of the facility.

Following brief remarks from each speaker, Sheldon’s Mayor, and City Council Members, along with Senator Feenstra, Rick Nordahl, Dave Van Wyk, Skip Tanner of the Ambassadors Club, and Hoogendoorn Construction, turned the symbolic shovels full of dirt to complete the official groundbreaking for the project.

The City is still seeking suggestions for a name for the new event center, which is just south of the Holiday Inn Express in eastern Sheldon.  If you’d like to submit your entry in the contest, just download the official entry form here.  Contest rules and requirements can be found here.
