Area Fire Deparments Have Busy Weekend

fireNorthwest Iowa — Area fire departments were kept hopping over the weekend.

Shortly before 5 Saturday afternoon the Doon Fire Department was called to a shed fire at 2366 Garfield Avenue, which is about one and a half miles north of Doon.  No details on that fire are available at this time.

Shortly before 9:00 pm Saturday, Hospers firefighters were called to a gas leak at 115 Highland Avenue, in the northern part of that city.  Information on that call is unavailable.

Sunday morning about 10:40, the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to a field fire at the intersection of Highway 75 and 140th Street, about one and a half miles northwest of Rock Rapids.  Rock Rapids Fire Chief Ed Reck says the fire was a burn pile that got out of control, and was quickly extinguished.

Then about 1:45 Sunday afternoon, the Orange City Fire Department was called to a reported structure fire at 4248 Ibex Avenue, which is about four and one half miles northwest of Orange City.  Orange City Fire Chief Denny Vanderwel says that call stemmed from a smoldering compost pile inside a quonset-style building.  Vanderwel says the compost pile was dug out in the areas where it was smoldering.  He says his department didn’t have to put any water on the fire, but were on scene for nearly four hours.  No damage was reported.
