Blood Supply Down, Drive Scheduled Thursday In Sibley

Sibley, Iowa — Blood supplies are low, especially for certain types of blood. But you can help at a blood drive Thursday in Sibley.

Community Blood Bank will host a community blood drive on Thursday, March 22 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley. They invite individuals that have donated multiple times as well as those that are donating for the first time, and they tell us that a person can donate blood every 56 days.

Ken Versteeg, Executive Director of Community Blood Bank says that it continues to be extremely difficult to keep up with the demand for life-saving blood as a decrease is seen in donations due to this year’s cold and flu season.

He says that’s why they’re encouraging those that are feeling well and healthy to help support the blood supply, no matter what their blood type is.

He says donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health the day of the donation. You are asked to bring an ID with you. It is recommended that you eat a full meal and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood. They tell us that it only takes 30 to 35 minutes to donate with Community Blood Bank.

Community Blood Bank is the sole provider of blood and blood products to 32 local area hospitals, including Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
