Learn Survival Skills, Meet Iowa Honey Queen All At PHC

Sutherland, Iowa — Two activities are being held this Thursday, July 20th at the Prairie Heritage Center near Sutherland. One is a survival camp for beginners, the other is a chance to meet the 2017 Iowa Honey Queen.

In the morning, the center will host a survival camp for beginners. O’Brien County Naturalist Charlene Elyea tells us more.

Meanwhile, your chance to meet the honey queen is this Thursday evening, at 7 p.m. As part of her reign, Carly Raye, the 2017 Iowa Honey Queen is coming to the Prarie Heritage Center, says Elyea.

Elyea tells us that Raye has been keeping bees for three years now, after getting her start from a beekeeping scholarship that the honey producers association provided. Her favorite fact about honey is that an individual worker bee only makes a 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey her entire life.

You are invited to come out to the Prairie Heritage Center to learn more about the insects. For more information, contact the O’Brien County Conservation Board at 712-295-7200.
