Sioux Center To Build $25 Million Wastwater Plant

sewer lidSioux Center, Iowa — You may remember that the City of Sheldon is having to make upgrades to their wastewater treatment plant to comply with new state regulations. Sheldon is not alone. The City of Sioux Center is facing those same issues and will need to build a new wastewater treatment plant. That’s according to Sioux Center Municipal Utility Manager Murray Hulstein.

He says the work is needed for a couple of reasons.

He says they will be exchanging some property so they have a place build the facility. He says it was important to build the new plant at this site because engineers found that building on a different site would increase the cost by $7 million, a cost which would have to have been borne by their users.

He tells us about the timeline for the project.

Hulstein says estimates for the project at this point are a little over $25 million. He says the Municipal Utility leaders are deciding how to finance the project. He says there will likely be a rate increase, and they’re also looking at tax increment financing.

Construction is planned adjacent to the existing plant, which is east of the intersection of 13th Avenue and 20th Street Southeast.
