UPDATE: Hartley Teen Dies In Friday Noon Crash East of Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — A Hartley teen has died as a result of injuries he received in a two-car crash east of Sheldon shortly after noon Friday.

The Iowa State Patrol identifies the victim of the crash as 16-year old Ryan Otis Pederson, of Hartley. Troopers say Pederson was eastbound on 330th Street in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, when his car was struck on the driver’s side by a 2006 Ford Focus, driven by 29-year old Steven J. Landhuis of Archer, which was southbound on Oriole Avenue. According to authorities, both cars entered the southeast ditch, with Pederson’s car coming to rest upside down in standing water.

Pederson was transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by SCAT. Landhuis was taken to Sanford Sheldon by private vehicle.

Sheldon, Iowa — Two people were injured in a two-car crash east of Sheldon shortly after noon Friday.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred at the intersection of 330th Street and Oriole Avenue, which is about 3-1/2 miles east of Sheldon. Troopers say a 2006 Ford Focus, driven by 29-year old Steven Landhuis of Archer was southbound on Oriole Avenue, and collided with the driver’s side of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, which was eastbound on 330th Street. 

According to the accident report, both cars entered the southeast ditch, with the Pontiac coming to rest upside down in standing water.

The driver of the Pontiac, who authorities have not identified, was taken to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by SCAT. Landhuis was taken to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by private vehicle. No condition report was available for either driver.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Sheldon Fire Department, and Sheldon Community Ambulance Team.
