It’s National Pretzel Day! Here are some facts about pretzels:

1. The world can thank a frustrated teacher with leftover bread dough for the invention of the soft pretzel. In 610 C.E., while baking break, an Italian monk decided to create a treat to motivate his distracted catechism students. He rolled out ropes of dough, twisted them to resemble hands crossed on the chest in prayer and baked them. The monk christened his snacks as “pretiola” which is Latin for “little reward”. Parents who tasted their children’s classroom treats referred to them as “brachiola”, or little arms.
2. Pennsylvania has about 45 pretzel companies in the state. Due to that fact, 80 percent of the pretzels sold in the U.S. are made in Pennsylvania.
3. Pretzels are traditionally made with wheat flour, so the traditional pretzel contains anywhere from 300 to 500 calories.
4. Pretzels are also high in carbs, low in protein, but contain some B vitamins.
5. The current Guinness World Record holder for largest pretzel is Pilsner in El Salvador. In October of 2015, employees baked a massive pretzel that measured 29 feet, three inches (or 8.93 meters) long by 13 feet and three inches wide (or four meters wide). It weighted a whopping 1,728 pounds.

It’s National Garlic Day! Here are a few facts about garlic:

1. Garlic is a Superhero. While actually not an Avenger, garlic does have so many health benefits that it deserves to be considered a superhero.
2. Obviously, some people eat way more garlic than others, but overall the average person eats about two pounds of garlic each year.
3. 2/3 of all garlic is grown in China.
4. When you think of garlic, you think of the bulb, but there’s more to the plant than that and it’s edible. Some varieties produce green shoots called scrapes that are reminiscent of scallion, but with garlicky flavor.
5. Garlic can ward off blood suckers. No I am not talking about vampires, though that particular piece of lore likely comes from garlic’s true ability as it’s a natural mosquito repellant.
6. Garlic can make glue. If you’ve ever cut garlic, you’ve probably noticed the sticky residue the juice leaves on your hands. This, actually, works quite well as a bonding agent for small and delicate projects like glass.

According to a study by Ohio State University, the number of distinct human emotions is at least 21. Throughout history, it was believed that there are just a small handful of basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise and disgust. But researchers recruited 230 volunteers to pose for simple portraits. Each photograph was captured after providing the subjects with scenarios to respond to emotionally – things like smelling bad odors, or hearing surprising news.

After capturing 5,000 different portraits, the team fed them to a computer for analysis of facial muscles. This technique revealed that there are 21 different complex emotions that are common to humanity.
