Remsen St. Mary’s Falls In Consolations

DES MOINES – In a rematch of the 2017 eight-player football championship game, Don Bosco, Gilbertville and St. Mary’s, Remsen met in Thursday morning’s Class 1A consolation game and ended up with the same result. The Dons (24-4) took over in the second half to notch a 61-51 win and secure third-place, which goes down as the best finish in program history.

Coach Nate Kellogg’s squad was led by two 24-point scorers in Jack Kelley and Zach Nie. Don Bosco capped a solid defensive effort with a 20-of-21 shooting day at the free throw line, which prevented a St. Mary’s comeback in the quick contest. The Hawks (26-2) finished fourth for the second year in a row, led by senior Derrick Schorg’s 18 points.
