Sheldon and West Lyon Split Basketball Doubleheader

Basketball scoreboardSheldon Iowa — Sheldon and West Lyon split a Siouxland Conference basketball doubleheader at Orab Gym Friday night. West Lyon ranked 15 in the latest 2A girls poll got their 10th win of the year with a 56-36 final. The boys game went to Sheldon 82-65.

In the girls game the Wildcats led at all the breaks. They were up 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-17 at the half. A 10-2 run to start the second half set them up for a 39-27 third quarter lead and the eventual win 56-36.

Jessica Meyer was the game top scorer with 13 points followed by Mia Hoogeveen with 11. Sheldon was led by Bryn Groff and Kacy Kamphoff with 8 points each.

With the win West Lyon is 10-1 on the year and 8-1 in the conference. Their only loss has been to Sioux Center the second ranked team in Class 3A. Sheldon is 3-9 for the season and 2-8 in the Siouxland.

 

In the boys game both teams were hot from the outside hitting 7 three-pointers each in the first half. Sheldon finished with 10 on the night while the Wildcats hit a total of 11 from behind the arc. Issac Heyer hit 7 three’s on the night on route to a game high 28 points. Tyler Merley dropped 5 three’s in totaling 17 points on the night.

Sheldon led 32-18 at the end of the first quarter and 44-35 at the half. Sheldon took a 62-48 third quarter lead and went on to win it 82-65. Heyer was joined in double figures by Mitch Rentchler with 12 points and Micah Meyer with 11. Kyle Boerhave led the Orabs with 23 points followed by Merley with 17 and Jaden Kleinhesslink with 16.

With the win Sheldon is 10-1 on the season and 8-1 after their first pass through the Siouxland Conference. West Lyon is 7-2 on the year and 6-2 in the Conference.

Next action for Sheldon will be Tuesday with a trip to Spencer for a non-conference game. West Lyon will be at Rock Valley Tuesday as they wrap up their first run through the conference.
