Sheldon Splits Home Doubleheader Against Okoboji

basketballSheldon Iowa — The Sheldon Orab Basketball Teams split a home double header against Okoboji Friday night. The girls game went to the Pioneers 59-28 while the Orabs took the boys game on a 68-52 final score.

Okoboji led at all the breaks in the girls game up 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. The lead was 30-16 at halftime before they pushed it to 48-24 at the end of the third quarter as they went on to win 59-28.

Okoboji had two players in double figures getting a game high 16 from Molly Mitchell and 10 from Emily Wintz. Sheldon was led by Sydney Iedema with 13 points.

With the loss Sheldon is even at 1-1 on the season and in the conference. Okoboji,  rated number 8 in the latest 2A poll improves to 4-0 on the season.

 

In the boys game that followed Sheldon led at all the breaks. After the Pioneers opened with a 6-0 run the Orabs stormed back to even the score and eventually take a 14-10 first quarter lead that went to 36-25 at half time. At the end of three Sheldon was up 55-36 before going on to win the season opener 68-52.

Sheldon’s Devon Johnson led all scorers with 23 points hitting a trio of threes and 7 two-point buckets. Jaden Kleinhesselink added 11. Okoboji had three players in double figures getting 20 from Alex Heller, 12 from Jake Dodge and another 11 from Preston Harms who hit a trio of threes all in the second quarter.

Sheldon opens at 1-0 while the Pioneers took their first loss of the year and stand at 2-1 for the season.

Sheldon returns to the floor for a Saturday afternoon matinee at South O’Brien. The girls tip off and 3:00 with the boys game to follow. Okoboji has the weekend off and will get back on the floor next Tuesday when they travel to Central Lyon.
