MOC Floyd Valley And Sioux Center Volleyball Teams Both State Tournament Bound

The MOC Floyd Valley Lady Dutch Volleyball Team is State Tournament bound following a straight set win over Algona in the Class 3A Region 1 Title Game in Spencer Tuesday night.

The 3rd ranked Lady Dutch won on scores of 25-14, 25-11 and 25-11. With the win MOC Floyd Valley improves to 30-8 on the season. The Algona Bulldogs end the year at 23-15.

We spoke with head coach Jon Mouw who said the win was a team effort.

4th ranked Sioux Center also earned a trip to State Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over 11th ranked East Sac in the Region 2 championship decided at the Sioux City East Gym. The set scores were 25-19, 25-23 and 25-15. Sioux Center is now 31-6 for the season. East Sac ends the year at 31-6.

Both the Lady Dutch and Warriors open quarterfinal play on Thursday November 8th.

#3 MOC-Floyd Valley will open against #9 Red Oak (27-6)  at 1:30 on court two; #4 Sioux Center opens against #7 Union (33-7) on court one at 1:30.

With renovations continuing at the U.S. Cellular Center State Tournament play will be held at the Ice Arena for the second straight year.

State Volleyball Tournament Berths To Be Decided on Wednesday Night in 1A And 2A

Iowa 1A and 2A volleyball teams enter the Region Finals tonight. In Class 1A Region 1 George Little Rock will meet 7th ranked LeMars Gehlen for a State Tournament berth at Sioux Center.

In the lower bracket semi final George Little Rock upset 5th ranked Central Lyons 3-2 in George. After dropping the first two sets 9-25 and 25-27 the Mustangs came roaring back to take the final three and the match 25-16, 25-21 and 15-12.

LeMars Gehlen won the upper bracket semi with a 3-0 win over Remsen Union at Akron. The set scores were 25-13, 25-16 and 25-20. The Mustangs come in at 14-17 while Gehlen stands at 20-10.

In Class 2A Region 1 the championship matches 2nd ranked Western Christian and 11th ranked Ridgeview. The Wolfpack won the lower bracket semi 3-0 at home against Sibley Ocheyedan. The scores were 25-4, 25-7 and 25-12.

Ridge View won the upper bracket semi final with a 3-1 home win over 15th ranked Boyden Hull. The set scores were 25-20, 18-25, 25-21 and 25-16.

The Wolfpack bring a 40-3 record into the finals while the Raptors come in at 30-7.

Tonight’s winners will advance to the State Tournament in Cedar Rapids.

One Area Football Team Remains In Playoff Action

The Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks are the lone KIWA listening area team still standing in football playoff action, burying Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 45-7 in a game heard on KIWA-FM Monday night.  The Nighthawks next opponent will be Spirit Lake, after the Indians ended Sheldon’s season, handing the Orabs a 43-7 loss.  Spirit Lake will travel to Hull Friday night for a quarterfinal round game with Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in Class 2A.

Spirit Lake Ends Orabs Football Season in Second Round of The Football Playoffs

The 5th ranked Spirit Lake Indians rolled to a 43-7 second round playoff win over Sheldon Monday night in Spirit Lake. The Indians improve to 10-1 while the Orabs close the year at 8-3.

Spirit Lake opened the scoring late in the first quarter as Quarterback Paul Brown found Bryson McCabe for a 39 yard touchdown pass. Brett Cochran Bray added the extra point to put the Indians in front 7-0.

A four touchdown second quarter would effectively put the game away. Brown scored on a 10 yard run, Cody Poock went in from 2 yards out and McCabe scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns on a 26 yard scamper. Cochran Bray was good on 4-of-4 extra point kicks.

With 1:53 left in the half the Indians defense got into the act recovering a fumble and returning it for a score to make it 36-0 at the half.

Early in the third quarter McCabe scored on a 95 yard run as Spirit Lake went up 43-0. Sheldon got on the board as the defense recovered a fumble at the Spirit Lake 15 yard line. Logan Otis scored on a 15 yard run with 7:43 to play in the ballgame. Trevor Mayer added the extra point and the final would be 43-7.

Next up for Spirit Lake is a rematch with Boyden Hull Rock Valley in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs on Friday in Hull. The Nighthawks claimed a mid season non district game that was also played at Hesla Field in Hull.

The Nighthawks Beat Up The Cardinals

The #1 ranked Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks advanced to the quarterfinals after beating the Garner Hayfield Ventura Cardinals 45-7 on Monday night.


Boyden Hull Rock Valley set the tone for the game when they recovered a Alex Van Gerpen fumble on the Cardinal 24 yard line on the second play from scrimmage. The Nighthawks scored a few plays later when quarterback Brandt Van Roekel hit JC Koerselman for an 18 yard touchdown. With the missed extra point it was 6-0 in favor of the Nighthawks with 10:08 left in the first quarter.


After forcing a Cardinal three an out, the Nighthawks took over again with great field position on the Garner Hayfield Ventura 30 yard line. The Nighthawks drove the ball 30 yards in 1:56 and capped the drive with a 2 yard quarterback keeper by Brandt Van Roekel. The missed two point conversion attempt made the score 12-0 with 6:21 left in the first quarter.


Those missed extra points were avenged for the Nighthawks when they forced another 3 and out, than Luke Keeble and Chris Sietstra blocked a Cardinal punt. The ball rolled through the back of the endzone for a safety, making the score 14-0 with 4:21 left in the first quarter.


Boyden Hull Rock Valley finished off the 21 point first quarter on the next possession when Brandt Van Roekel was able to find JC Koerselman on a 38 yard touchdown pass. Van Roekels second touchdown pass finished off a 58 yard drive in 1:52.


The second quarter was more of the same for the Nighthawks as they added two more touchdowns and a field goal. The first touchdown came on a 26 yard drive in just a 1:25, the scoring play on the drive occurred when Brandt Van Roekel threw his third touchdown pass to Andrew Van Ginkel on a 23 yard pass play. With 10:50 left in the 2nd quarter, the Nighthawks led 28-0.


Van Ginkel wasn’t finished when he added an interception of quarterback Spencer Shaw on the next Garner Hayfield Ventura possession, he returned the interception to the Cardinal 23 yard line. The Nighthawks scored a few plays later on a 25 yard screen pass to Luke Keeble from Brandt Van Roekel. At the 8:53 mark in the second quarter it was Nighthawks 35, Cardinals 0. Boyden Hull Rock Valley added a field goal towards the end of the half after another Andrew Van Ginkel interception turned away the Cardinals, making the score 38-0 at halftime.


The Nighthawks than took the second half kickoff and drove the ball 93 yards in 2:15. Logan Steins scored on a 72 yard run making the score 45-0 with 9:34 left in the third quarter. The Nighthawks scored on each of their first 8 possessions before punting on the 9th possession.


Garner Hayfield Ventura put their first points on the board in the middle of the 4th quarter after a 10 yard touchdown run by Alex Van Gerpen. That rushing play capped a 54 yard drive that lasted 4:38. The final score was 45-7 Nighthawks.


Friday night the Nighthawks (11-0, 6-0 in District) will host 5th ranked Spirit Lake in Hull, which is a rematch of an earlier season game in which Boyden Hull Rock Valley won 25-10. Spirit Lake beat Sheldon 43-7 to advance to the quarterfinal round. Garner Hayfield Ventura will finish the season with a 7-4 record.

Class 3A Region Volleyball Titles to be Decided Tuesday Night. MOC Floyd Valley And Sioux Center Look to Punch Their Tickets

State Tournament berths are up for grabs tonight as Class 3A volleyball moves into the Region Finals.

Third ranked MOC Floyd Valley will meet unranked Algona at Spencer tonight. MOC Floyd Valley is riding a 5 game winning streak and comes in with a record of 29-8. The Lady Dutch knocked out 5th ranked Unity Christian 3-1 in the semi finals on their home floor. The set scores were 25-23, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-19.

Algona advanced with a 3-0 semi final win over Forest City defending their home floor. The set scores were 25-18, 25-21 and 25-13. Algona is riding a 3 game winning streak and enter the finals unranked at 23-14 on the season. We’ll bring you the broadcast on KIWA FM 105.3 with pregame at 6:45 for a 7pm first serve.
In Region 2 of 3A 4th ranked Sioux Center will meet 11th ranked East Sac at the Sioux City East Gym. That is a change of game site from the original brackets.

Sioux Center is 30-6 on the year with an 8 game winning streak coming off a 3-0 home win over Sergeant Bluff Luton in the semi finals.

East Sac is 31-5 for the season with an 8 game winning streak as well with a 3-0 home win over Roland Story in the semi finals.
