Area College Softball & Baseball From Saturday

In College Softball:

A Haley Huisman single in the top of the seventh inning gave the Dordt College Defenders a 3-2 win over the Midland Warriors in game one of their softball doubleheader in Fremont, Nebraska on Saturday.

Dordt allowed a run in the third inning but bounced back with a two run fourth when Kaitlyn Lockhorst reached in the top of the fourth and scored when Kacy Oberfoell helped her cause with a two-run homerun for a 2-1 lead. The Defenders relinquished the lead in the sixth when Midland plated a run with a hit and a walk.

Dordt got the eventual winning run with the single by Huisman that scored Megan Huizenga. Huizenga had doubled and advanced to third on an error charged to the centerfielder. Huisman’s hit came with two outs.

In the nightcap, Dordt allowed a run in the first and one in the sixth en route to a 2-0 loss to Midland.

Midland got one run on two hits and two walks in the first inning with Dordt’s Sidney Larsen getting out of the inning as she stranded three runners. The Defenders finally had a scoring chance in the sixth with Kaitlyn Lockhorst and Ashton Beaird both reaching and advancing to second and third with one out. Two line drive outs ended the inning and Midland got a run for insurance in the sixth and forced Dordt to strand two more runners in the top of the seventh for the 2-0 win.

Dordt will face Briar Cliff on Wednesday, April 18 in the next outing for the Defenders.

After Saturday’s games, Dordt’s record is 17-17 overall, and 7-5 in the GPAC.

In College Baseball:

Northwestern dropped a pair of games to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday.  In the opening game at Orange City Saturday, it was Nebraska Wesleyan downing the Red Raiders by a 7-2 final, before coming back to sweep in the nightcap 7-3 over Northwestern.

A first inning run by the Dordt College Defenders and a dominating pitching performance by Lucas Carls was enough for Dordt to beat the Concordia Bulldogs 1-0 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action on Saturday in the first game of their doubleheader. Carls struck out a career high 14 batters and allowed scattered three hits in preserving the complete game win.

Concordia took a split of the doubleheader by beating Dordt  8-1 to win in the nighcap. Concordia scored three in the second inning and then tacked one one in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Dordt got a run in the sixth to make it 5-1 at the time and missed out on an even bigger inning when they left the bases loaded.

Dordt is now 11-23 overall and 2-10 in the GPAC. Concordia is 20-21 and 5-5 in league play.

Big Spirit Lake

Walleye and musky season is closed.   Panfish are being caught off the North Grade and Templar Park. A few smallmouth bass along with white bass may be caught on rock piles in various parts of the lake.  Largemouth Bass – Slow: A few largemouths have moved to pre-spawn areas around the lake.

East Okoboji Lake

Walleye and musky season is closed. Bullhead – Fair: Try using worms on bottom.  Yellow Bass – Good: Many yellow bass are being caught try looking for rocks and wood and use small baits.

 Silver Lake (Dickinson)

White Bass – Fair: Try using baits that represent minnows such as Rapalas and twister tails.

 West Okoboji Lake

Walleye and musky season is closed.  Due to being the deepest lake in the chain the water is not warming up as fast as the other lakes but is still ahead of normal.  Panfish and largemouth bass are being caught in the canals as well as in some of the bays.  Both largemouth and smallmouth bass may be caught near docks and there outskirts a few white bass and northern pike may be picked up at the same time.

The warm spring has brought upon above average water temperatures for this time of year and the fish are responding accordingly.  Most if not all courtesy docks are in. For more information on fishing in northwest Iowa, call the Spirit Lake hatchery at 712-336-1840.
