Taylor Francis To Play Basketball At Northwestern

Taylor Francis of Hull has signed a letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Northwestern College next year.

Francis is a 6’2” shooting guard who lettered two years for Boyden-Hull High School. Francis averaged 13 points, three rebounds and 3.5 assists per game and helped lead the Comets to the class 1A state championship with a 26-2 overall record. Francis shot 37% from beyond the arc, making a team-best 54 three-pointers, and was an all-substate and all-conference selection. He also shot better than 80% from the free throw line.

Francis plans to major in history and is the son of Bill and Sondra.

“Taylor is a quality young man,” commented head coach Kris Korver. “He is a winner and has a real understanding of how to play the game. Taylor works hard, competes hard and we are excited that he will be joining us at Northwestern College.”


South O’Brien And Sibley Ocheyedan Win Titles At HMS Hawk Relays

At the HMS Hawk Relays Friday South O’Brien won the team title on the Boys side while the Girls title went to Sibley Ocheyedan.

In the boys team totals it was South O’Brien at 144 followed by Sheldon at 94, Sibley Ocheyedan at 90, Clay Central Everly at 82 and George Little Rock with 63 to round out the top five. HMS was 6th at 32 followed by Akron Westfield at 27, Spalding at 17 and Remsen St Mary’s with 8 team points.

First place finishes for Sheldon were turned in by the 4 by 100 meter relay team with a time of 45:51 followed by South O’Brien in 45:64. Sheldon won the 4 by 400 in 3:38.38 followed by South O’Brien in 3:39.29. The 4 by 800 went to Sheldon in 9:09.98 followed by South O’Brien in 9:11.8. The Orabs also took the shuttle hurdle relay on a time of 1:04.1 followed by Akron Westfield in 1:05.13.

The girl’s team title went to Sibley Ocheyedan with 126 team points followed by Okoboji at 110. HMS was third at 104 followed by South O’Brien at 90 and George Little Rock at 66. The rest of the team totals had Remsen St Mary’s at 26 followed by Spalding at 23. Ruthven Ayrshire and Clay Central Everly both at 11 points. Akron Westfield totaled 8 team points.

Dordt And Northwestern Sweep Baseball Doubleheaders

A 17 hit attack propelled the Dordt College Defender baseball team to a 14-3 win on the road over the Briar Cliff Chargers in GPAC play on Friday afternoon.

Dordt built a comfortable lead for Dordt starter Ben Van Kekerix with six in the fifth inning as Travis Dekkers struck for a grand slam and two more in the sixth on four hits extended the lead to 13-1.

Ben Van Kekerix the former Sheldon Orab scattered ten hits in getting his second win of the season and struck out three with no walks.  His brother Josh Van Kekerix came on in relief and pitched a scoreless seventh and allowed one hit. Nathan Olson pitched the first four innings and took the loss for Briar Cliff.


A four run second inning got the Defenders off and running on the way to a 7-3 win, securing a sweep. The win pushed the Defenders into the hunt for a GPAC playoff berth with six games remaining

Dordt is 13-23 overall and 4-10 in the league while Briar Cliff is now 23-24 overall and 7-7 in the conference. Dordt is scheduled to host Midland Saturday afternoon at 2:00.



Northwestern swept a doubleheader with Midland Lutheran at Freemont Nebraska Friday. The Red Raiders took the opener 12-2 and the nightcap 4-1.
