Perseid Meteor Shower

August 13 @ 8:00pm

The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the best known meteor showers in the Northern Hemisphere.  It will soon be time again for this annual event.  The earth’s orbit is crossing into the debris path of the Swift-Tuttle comet which last passed through the inner solar system over 20 years ago.  The shower gradually builds to a peak of about 60 meteors an hour.

Although the best time to view this magnificent event is just before dawn, the O’Brien County Conservation Board will be hosting a Perseid Meteor Shower party on Tuesday, August 13 beginning at 8:00 p.m.  Come to the Prairie Heritage Center to learn more about meteors and summer constellations. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and spend some time enjoying the summer night sky.  Enjoy the sunset on the prairie, check out the stars as they begin to come out and stay for the meteor show.

For more information, contact the Conservation Board at 712-295-7200.
