Doon, Iowa — 200 round cornstalk bales were destroyed in a fire on Monday, May 17, 2021, near Doon.
According to Doon Fire Chief Blake Van Bemmel, about 5:10 a.m., the Doon Fire Department was called to the report of a round bale fire at 2552 Fig Avenue, two miles west of Doon.
The chief says the fire department saw the bales on fire as they approached the scene. He says they tore the bales apart and spread them out on the ground, dousing them with water.
Van Bemmel says no injuries were reported.
The fire department was assisted by the Alvord Fire Department.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be spontaneous combustion.
Chief Van Bemmel reports that all 200 bales were destroyed. At a recent cost at the Rock Valley Hay Auction of $36 per ton, the bales were worth over five thousand dollars.
He says the firefighters who responded were on scene for three and a half hours.
