Alleged Car Thieves Call Sheriff’s Office When Car Runs Out Of Gas; Get Arrested

Rock Rapids, Iowa — Two women from the Sioux City area have been arrested on felony charges after an incident that ended up in Rock Rapids.

Two individuals, 24-year-old Brandy DeCora of Winnebago, Nebraska, and 21-year-old Prairee Springer of Sioux City, are accused of stealing a 2016 Nissan Rogue, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. They were arrested early on Wednesday.

In his statement, the deputy says the county communications center received a call on their non-emergency line stating that the caller and her friend had stolen a car, and they had now run out of gas. A deputy was dispatched. He says the odor of alcohol was present with DeCora, who had allegedly been the driver. He says she admitted to drinking. Springer is also accused of the theft, which also allegedly included an iPhone. The deputy who spoke to Springer says that she had no plan of returning the items as she could not recall where the victim’s residence was.

DeCora was charged with first-degree theft, a class C felony, and operating while under the influence, third or subsequent offense, a class D felony. Springer is also charged with first-degree theft and a misdemeanor charge of third-degree theft. If convicted of a class C felony, a defendant could face up to ten years in prison, with five years for a class D felony.

They face preliminary hearings on Friday, December 19th.

At last report, the pair remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids — DeCora on a $15,000 bond, and Springer on a $12,000 bond.
