Hawarden, Iowa– Three fire departments were called out for a fire on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, near Hawarden.
According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, at about 6:05 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a manure pile fire in the field near 400th Street and Chestnut Avenue, five and a half miles northeast of Hawarden.
The chief says the fire department saw the pile on fire as they approached the scene. He says the pile had probably been on fire for a couple of days.
The fire department was assisted by the Ireton and Hudson fire departments and farmers with payloaders and disks.
Schiefen says no injuries were reported.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be spontaneous combustion.
Chief Schiefen reports that there was minimal monetary damage.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours. He says they are very thankful to the farmers who assisted.

Meanwhile, farmers basically put out a fire that Sibley and Ocheyedan firefighters were called to on Wednesday night. Fire Chief Ken Huls says by the time they got there, farmers had the three-acre field fire surrounded by a firebreak and firefighters didn’t even have to spray any water. He says it may have been caused by smoking materials.
Doon firefighters also had a small field fire on Wednesday, most likely caused by a hot part on a baler. Only a small amount of stubble burned, according to Fire Chief Blake Van Bemmel.
