Barn Destroyed In Fire Northeast of Alvord

Alvord, Iowa — A barn was destroyed in a fire on Friday, October 17, 2025, near Alvord.

According to Alvord Fire Chief Tanner Van Middendorp, at about 3:00 p.m., the Alvord Fire Department was called to the report of a barn on fire at 2723 180th Street, a mile and a half east, three miles north, and over another mile east of Alvord, or about four miles southwest of Rock Rapids.

When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw the barn fully engulfed, with a field of soybean stubble on fire too. He says they cooled off surrounding buildings and put out the field fire, but the barn collapsed soon after they arrived.

Van Middendorp says no injuries were reported.

He says Doon firefighters automatically assist the Alvord firefighters with structure fires, so they were there too.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but may have been related to a nearby burn hole.

Chief Van Middendorp reports that the barn was totaled, but the occupants of the farm place had been considering tearing it down anyway. There was very little of value in it.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour.
