Larchwood, Iowa — A Canton woman was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital after an accident west of Larchwood on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that shortly before 6:20 a.m., 55-year-old Eda Lodmel Fonder of Canton, SD was driving her 2013 BMW southbound on K-12, or Beech Avenue, four miles due west of the south side of Larchwood, or two miles south of where westbound Highway 9 turns north. They tell us that 73-year-old Harley Dale VerMulm of Hudson, SD was driving a 2015 Ford Transit Van owned by Casey’s Bakery Inc. on 140th Street, or A-18.
The sheriff’s office says Fonder allegedly failed to obey the stop sign and struck the bakery van. The van went into the north ditch and came to a rest. The BMW entered the west ditch, struck a field drive, vaulted in the air, and landed in the cornfield west of K-12.
The Lyon County Ambulance Squad took Fonder to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
They tell us the bakery van received about $3,500 in damages and the BMW received approximately $8,000 in damages.
Fonder was cited on a charge of failure to obey stop sign, a simple misdemeanor.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that Larchwood EMS, the Larchwood Fire Department, the Lyon County Ambulance Squad, Inwood Body Shop, and the Iowa State Patrol assisted with the response to the accident.
