Cold Makes For Frigid Friday Firefighting Near George

George, Iowa– Two farm buildings and their contents were destroyed in a fire on Friday, December 23, 2022, near George.

According to George Fire Chief Bill Sprock, at about 12:10 p.m., the George Fire Department was called to the report of a building fire at 2273 Kingbird Avenue, a mile east and a mile and a half south of the funeral home corner in George.

The chief says the fire department saw a hog barn and a barn both fully engulfed, with a garage on fire as they approached the scene.

Sprock says no injuries were reported.

The Boyden Fire Department was asked to bring a tanker of water to assist, which they did.

He says the cause of the fire was that someone had been trying to thaw ice with a Knipco-style heater.

Chief Sprock reports that there was twenty to twenty-five thousand dollars in damage, which included the buildings, some fence posts and a couple of mowers.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for three and a half hours but firefighters were called back for a flareup in the evening and worked for another hour and a half. Sprock says the weather was a factor in the fire, with winds at 35 miles per hour and a windchill of about 45 degrees below zero. He says one of their trucks froze up.
