Rock Valley, Iowa — A corn crib was destroyed in a fire on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, near Rock Valley.
According to Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis, at about 12:30 p.m., the Rock Valley Fire Department was called to the report of a corncrib fire at 2759 310th Street, about a mile east of the east side of Rock Valley on Highway 18.
The chief says the fire department saw the corn crib was pretty well engulfed, with another barn east of it starting to burn on the roof as they approached the scene. He says they wet down the other buildings on the farm place and let the corncrib burn, since it was beyond saving.
Eshuis says no injuries were reported.
The fire department was assisted by Hull, Sioux Center, and Doon firefighters. The Hull firefighters responded as part of their auto aid agreement.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be sparks from a burn pit.
Chief Eshuis reports that the corncrib was totaled, with some damage to the roof of the other building.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
