Corn Crib Near George Destroyed In Fire

George, Iowa — A corn crib was destroyed in a fire on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, near George.

According to Assistant George Fire Chief Josh Eben, at about 3:05 p.m., the George Fire Department was called to the report of a grain barn on fire at 1944 Lily Avenue, four miles east and a mile and a half north of George.

The chief says the fire department saw the small corn crib fully involved in fire and almost on the ground as they approached the scene. He says they put out what was left of it and protected the other buildings.

Assistant Chief Eben says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by Little Rock firefighters as per their auto aid agreement. He says they provided extra water and manpower.

Eben says the occupant had been burning in a barrel the day before and thought he had it out, but some sparks must have made their way to the corn crib.

Assistant Chief Eben reports that the corn crib and its contents of miscellaneous items were destroyed in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for a little over an hour.
