Doon, Iowa — A Doon teen received what were thought to be serious injuries in an accident on Thursday (May 18th) morning near Doon.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 8:00 a.m., 18-year-old Courtney Maassen of rural Doon was driving a 2004 Dodge Stratus southbound on K52, about five miles east of Doon, where she stopped at the stop sign and then continued south through the intersection. They report that 38-year-old Milton Timmer of Sioux Center was driving a 2006 Peterbuilt semi, pulling a feed trailer westbound on A52.
The truck struck Maassen’s vehicle on the driver’s side after Maassen allegedly failed to yield to the semi. Maassen’s vehicle ended up in the southwest ditch as a result of the impact.
The Lyon County Ambulance took Maassen, who they suspected sustained serious injuries, to Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.
Her Dodge sustained heavy damage and the Sheriff’s Office says it’s a total loss. They say the Peterbuilt sustained about $10,000 in damages.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that Doon Fire and Rescue personnel, the Lyon County Ambulance Squad, Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement, and Trackside Towing out of Alvord assisted with the response to the accident.
