Emergency Crews Respond To Saturday Crash South Of Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of a two-vehicle accident south of Sheldon Saturday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, about 1:40 Saturday afternoon, a 2004 Chevrolet pickup, driven by 63-year-old Doris McClain of Little Rock was northbound in the outside lane of Highway 60, about a mile south of Sheldon when a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica minivan travelling in front of her decreased its speed due to weather and road conditions.

Troopers say McClain attempted to pass the minivan, which was driven by 62-year-old Loren “Wally” Wolthuizen of Sheldon. While attempting to pass, troopers say McClain lost control of the vehicle while in the left lane, travelled into the path of the Wolthuizen minivan, striking the minivan and sending both vehicles into the east ditch. Wolthuizen’s minivan came to rest in the ditch, but the McClain pickup slid through the ditch, striking and toppling a DOT roadway sign.

Both McClain and Wolthuizen were transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team.

Damage to Wolthuizen’s Pacifica was estimated at $20,000, with damage to McClain’s pickup estimated at $5,000. In addition, there was an estimated $10,000 damage to the DOT roadway sign.

McClain was reportedly ticketed for Failure to Maintain Control.
