Farm Building Destroyed In Fire Near Sutherland

Sutherland, Iowa — A farm building was destroyed in a fire on Monday, January 19, 2026, near Sutherland.

According to Sutherland Fire Chief Rich Van Beek, at about 1:20 p.m., the Sutherland Fire Department was called to the report of a barn on fire near Walnut Avenue and 460th Street, about a mile north and a mile east of Sutherland.

When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw that the building was completely destroyed and was on the ground. He says they used water to put out the fire that remained.

Van Beek says some chickens housed in the building may have been lost in the blaze.

The fire department was assisted by the Calumet Fire Department.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature.

Chief Van Beek reports that the 24′ by 48′ building was totaled, as was an older tractor that had been in the building.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
