Fire By George Underlines Need For Vigilance In These Conditions

George, Iowa — With the dry weather we’ve been having for the last month or so and the dryness of the vegetation due to the end of the growing season, conditions are ripe for a fire, according to at least one area fire chief.

George Fire Chief Bill Sprock says their department responded to a ditch fire call on Thursday afternoon southeast of George. He says he’s not sure if it was intentional or not. He says only about 30 feet burned and they had it out in about 15 minutes. But that reminded him how dry things have been.

The weather forecast also calls for windy conditions, which make the threat of wildfires even greater.
