Sioux Center, Iowa — There were a few tense moments at a Sioux Center restaurant on Tuesday morning, July 26th.
According to Sioux Center Firefighter Dale Vander Berg, at about 9:30 a.m., the Sioux Center Fire Department was called to the report of a fire behind the fryer at Sioux Center’s Dairy Queen, on the frontage road in front of Walmart.
He says the fire department saw three-inch flames from the air space in the back of the fryer when they got there. Vander Berg says they used two fire extinguishers to fight the fire, and the hood above the unit worked as designed and exhausted the smoke out of the building. He tells us once the fire was out, they used their thermal imaging equipment to check for any hot spots.
Firefighter Vander Berg says no injuries were reported.
The Ireton Fire Department gets paged to all structure fires in Sioux Center, so they responded as well.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be some sort of malfunction with the fryer.
Firefighter Vander Berg reports that the damage was limited to the fryer, which may have to be replaced.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about a half an hour.
