Spirit Lake, Iowa – The cause of Saturday’s fire that destroyed one house and heavily damaged a second one in the Monarch Cove area on the northeast side of West Lake Okoboji remains uncertain.
Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly says he met with the State Fire Marshal this (Monday) morning at the scene but he says nothing could be determined given the scope of the destruction.
No one was hurt in the fire that was battled by four different area fire departments in temperatures that were well below zero.
Daly says temperatures down to -18F, high winds, no fire hydrants in the area, houses in close proximity, very narrow roads, snow, and ice made firefighting challenging.
