Firefighters Extinguish Fire In Granville Area Hog Barn

Granville, Iowa — A hog barn was damaged in a fire on Sunday, December 5, 2021, near Granville.

According to Granville Fire Chief Karl Kellen, about 3:00 p.m., the Granville Fire Department was called to the report of a hog barn fire at 4254 Monroe Avenue, two miles east and three and a half north of Granville.

The chief says the fire department saw smoke coming from the hog barn as they approached the scene. He says they had to remove some of the steel roofing that had been installed over the original wood roof to get at the fire.

Kellen says no injuries were reported. The horse that was in the building got out OK. He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction in a livestock water tank heater.

The Hospers firefighters get paged automatically to structure fire calls in the Granville district and vice versa. Kellen says he also asked for the Paullina Fire Department, but he turned them around when they knew what they were dealing with.

Chief Kellen reports that there was slight damage to the wood structure.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene 45 minutes.
