George, Iowa — The George Fire Department, with the assistance of the Little Rock Fire Department, put out a fire on Saturday night near George.
According to George Fire Chief Bill Sprock, the fire was at 4292 190th Street, two miles north and three east of George. The page went out at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night. He says the fire started as a controlled burn of the underbrush in the grove, but was sent out of control due to a change in the wind.
When firefighters arrived, basically the only things on fire were some dead trees, but Sprock says the wind was blowing 25 miles per hour out of the northwest, so they decided to put the trees out.
Sprock says they cut about 5-6 trees down to get them put out. He says one small shed had very little damage — maybe $100 at most.
No injuries were reported.
He says they were back at the station at 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning. He tells us that the George Emergency Medical Service (GEMS) also responded and assisted at the scene. The fire was called in by neighbors, according to the chief.
