Firefighters Fight Fire At George Meat Locker

George, Iowa — The George (meat) Locker was damaged in a fire on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in George.

According to George Fire Assistant Chief Josh Eben, firefighters were called at about 12:30 p.m.

The assistant chief says the fire department saw smoke and fire in the smoker chimney as they approached the scene. He says they found out the fire was in the smoker (located inside the building). He says they used an interior attack, then vented the building.

Assistant Chief Eben says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Little Rock Fire Department.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be grease buildup.

Assistant Chief Eben reports that there was no structural damage, but they did lose some meat in and near the smoker and there is smoke damage in the building.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
