George Firefighters Put Out Two Back-To-Back Fires On Saturday

George, Iowa– The George Fire Department was called out two two fires on Saturday, October 22, 2022, near George.

According to George Fire Chief Bill Sprock, the first call was at about 3:10 p.m. He says the George Fire Department was called to the report of a field fire near 260th Street and Jackson Avenue, five miles south and three east of the Frontier Bank corner in George.

The chief says the fire department saw the fenceline on fire as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

Sprock says no injuries were reported.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a hot bearing on a baler.

Chief Sprock reports that the damage was limited to cornstalks, grass, and a few fenceposts.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 20 minutes.

On the way back from that call, Sprock says they were called to another fire. This one was in the 3500 mile of 210th Street, about four and a half miles due west of George. He says the farmer had been burning some old trees, and with the wind that day the fire was stoaked up and blew into a combined cornfield.

He says only cornstalks burned, and they were there for another 20 minutes.
