George, Iowa — George firefighters were busy on Tuesday evening, June 11, 2024.
According to George Fire Chief Bill Sprock, at about 5:20 p.m., the George Fire Department was called to the report of a Quonset building fire about two miles west of George on the south side of A34.
The chief says a farmer had been burning a tree pile, when, due to the strong wind, the fire went out of control and some embers landed in the rafters of a nearby Quonset building. He says firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and save the building.
Sprock says two firefighters were treated on-scene for heat exhaustion by George Emergency Medical Service. He says they were not transported to a hospital.
Little Rock firefighters were paged but they were turned around, says Sprock.
Chief Sprock reports that there was minimal damage.
As they were cleaning up there, Sprock says they were radioed to respond to Casey’s in George for another call — for an odor in the building. He says they arrived to find that two employees were sick from the odor or fumes, which firefighters determined were a gaseous refrigerant. He says there was some sort of leak, so Casey’s in George closed for business and remained closed until the next day at 2:30 p.m. while repairs were made.
