Sutherland, Iowa — A Hartley man faces charges of Felony Forgery and Misdemeanor Theft dating back to an incident that happened in July of this year.
Court records indicate that then-33-year-old Jeremy Dean Bobzien is accused of selling property he owned from Facebook to Edward Olsem of Dundee Minnesota. According to court records, Olsem wrote Bobzien a check for $300, but left the “pay to the order of” line blank. Bobzien is accused of knowingly and willingly writing a “1” in front of the “3” to make the check amount $1300. Authorities say he also wrote the word “thirteen” over the word “three” on the check’s second line. Court records indicate Bobzien talked Joe Ripka into putting his name on the check and cashing it at the Security State Bank in Sutherland. Court records note that when Ripka was given the check it had already been altered to read $1300.
Authorities say Bobzien was arrested, by Clay County deputies, this Wednesday (November 6th) on warrants charging him with Forgery, a Class D Felony, for altering the check, and 3rd Degree Theft, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, for allegedly using the altered check to obtain cash from the bank.
Online court records indicate that a Preliminary Hearing in the case has been set for 9:30 am Tuesday November 26th at the courthouse in Primghar.
