Hartley Man Faces Felony OWI Charge

Hartley, Iowa — A Hartley man has been arrested on felony OWI charges after a traffic stop in Hartley.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Hartley Police Department, 45-year-old Aaron Sweet of Hartley is accused of driving while intoxicated.

In his statement, the officer states that authorities had received a call of a person who may be driving under the influence. The officer says he located the vehicle at Brew Oil gas station in Hartley, followed the vehicle and stopped it because he knew the driver’s license wasn’t valid. An odor of alcohol was also detected. The officer says Sweet failed field sobriety tests.

He was charged with Operating While Intoxicated. Since he had been convicted before on at least two occasions, the charge was a class D felony. If convicted, Sweet could face up to five years in prison.

He faces a preliminary hearing on Friday, May 5th.
