Hartley, Iowa — A Hartley teen was taken to the hospital after an accident in Hartley on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
The Hartley Police Department reports that at about 3:30 p.m., 53-year-old Lou Ann Crook of Spencer was driving a 2015 Subaru SUV eastbound on Highway 18, in the inside lane, at the old d-Lux Drive-In and Hog Slat corner. Sixteen-year-old Kaci Richter of Hartley was also eastbound on 18 in a 2010 Chevy, in the outside lane.
The report says that Richter had three minor passengers with her, which the officer says “lead to the confusion of where to turn.” The officer says Richter became confused when the passengers told her to turn left. She attempted to make an abrupt left turn onto North First Avenue West, from the outside lane. Crook collided with Richter during the turn.
The Hartley Ambulance took Richter to Spencer Hospital.
Crook’s Subaru SUV sustained $3000 in damages, and Richter’s Chevy sustained $5000 in damages.
Richter was charged with making an improper turn at an intersection and violation of a restricted license.
