Hull Teen Airlifted To Sioux Falls Hospital After Crash

Hull, Iowa — A Hull teen was flown to a Sioux Falls hospital after an accident near Hull on Thursday, April 12th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 3:55 p.m., 15-year-old Ian Van Grootheest of Hull was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Colorado pickup southbound on a residential driveway. They report that 66-year-old Vernon Van Beek of Inwood was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup towing a field cultivator westbound on Highway 18. Van Grootheest entered Highway 18, attempted to turn left and was struck by Van Beek. After the accident, Van Beek’s Dodge and the cultivator became detached, entered the south ditch and came to rest in a field. Van Grootheest’s Chevy pickup entered the north ditch.

The Hull Ambulance took Van Grootheest to the Sioux Center Health Hospital. He was later flown to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

The Van Grootheest Chevrolet pickup sustained about $20,000 in damage. The Van Beek Dodge pickup sustained an estimated $15,000 in damage. The field cultivator sustained approximately $500 in damage.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that the Hull Ambulance, Hull Fire Department, and Midwest Medical Ambulance assisted them. They say the accident remains under investigation.
