Canton, South Dakota — The Inwood Fire Department was among five area fire departments that were called out to a fire on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, near Canton.
According to Canton Fire Chief Nate Laubach, about 1:50 p.m., the Canton Fire Department was called to the report of a grass fire at the intersection of 281st Street and 480th Avenue, a mile northwest of Canton.
The chief says the fire department saw a large grass fire as they approached the scene. He says they used grass rigs, tankers, swatters, and rakes to fight the fire.
Laubach says one Harrisburg firefighter was treated for a twisted ankle.
The fire department was assisted by firefighters from Worthing, Harrisburg, Fairview, and Inwood.
He says the cause of the fire was that someone was cutting hay, and a metal part chipped a rock, with a spark getting into the windrows. He says it was dry enough that the wind pushed the flame into the windrows.
Chief Laubach reports that 20 acres of hay, 15 acres of pasture, and a beehive hut were destroyed in the fire.
He says after going to a second call and coming back, the firefighters who responded finished about 7 p.m.
