Lake Park Woman Walks Away From Car Versus Train Wreck, Uninjured

Sanborn, Iowa– A Lake Park woman escaped injury after her car hit a train near Sanborn on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 1:20 p.m., 32-year-old Lindsey Reese of Lake Park was driving a 2009 Buick northbound on Redwing Avenue, about a mile west of Sanborn. They tell us that a Canadian Pacific diesel locomotive was pulling a train eastbound on the railroad tracks.

The report says that upon approaching Redwing Avenue, the crew sounded the train’s horn. The deputy says all the locomotive’s lights on the front were on and functioning properly. Reese says she thought the train was stopped but upon hearing the train’s horn tried to stop her Buick, but locked up her brakes, leaving skid marks. The Buick pulled to the right shoulder of the road and the driver’s side hit the side of the locomotive under the area where the engineer sits.

Reese’s Buick sustained about $4000 in damages, and the deputy says the locomotive appears only to have scuff marks from the impact.

Reese was charged with failure to properly stop at a railroad crossing.
