Machine Shed, Contents Destroyed In Fire Just East Of County Line

Peterson, Iowa — A machine shed was destroyed in a fire on Monday, August 17, 2020, near Peterson.

According to Peterson Fire Chief Brandon Steinkuehler, about 10:30 a.m., the Peterson Fire Department was called to the report of a farm shop fire at 4805 105th Avenue, which is about two miles north, two west, and a half south of Peterson, or roughly five miles west and two south of Sutherland. It’s also about two miles northeast of the Prairie Heritage Center.

The chief says the fire department saw a large machine shed fully engulfed in flame and heavy black smoke as they approached the scene. He says two pumper trucks with dump tanks were used to fight the fire with water trucks shuttling water to the scene.

Steinkuehler says the homeowner received minor injuries, which were treated by medical personnel on-scene.

The fire department was assisted by firefighters from Sutherland, Royal, and Everly.

He says the cause of the fire is still under investigation, due to the fact that the building was mostly destroyed when they got there.

Chief Steinkuehler reports that in addition to the machine shed, which was totaled, also lost in the fire were a combine, two tractors, several used tires, and at least a barrel of used oil. He says the farmer was able to get one tractor out of the building before it could be consumed in flame.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours. Steinkuehler says he wishes to thank the fire crews from Sutherland, Royal, and Everly, in addition to the Peterson firefighters, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the Peterson Ambulance Squad, who all assisted with the response to the fire.
