Man In Jail In Lyon County Charged With Additional Felony

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man who was already in jail waiting for a court date on multiple counts of felony sexual abuse has now been charged with an additional felony count — a sex offender registration violation.

Earlier this month, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reported that they arrested 26-year-old Nathan Hanson of Rock Rapids. According to court records, Hanson faces six counts of Third Degree Sexual Abuse, a class C felony. The records allege he fondled a 13-year-old child multiple times. In addition, he is charged with Continuous Sex Abuse of a Child, which is a class B felony.

According to Iowa Code, if convicted of a class B felony, Hanson could face 25 years in prison.

But last week, an additional charge was filed against Hanson. The criminal complaint in the case says that a few days after his arrest, Hanson’s employment was terminated. It says that while he was in custody in the Lyon County Jail, he neglected to advise the Sex Offender Registry officer for the county of his change in employment. The document says he met with his probation officer on February 9th and was advised that he needed to get in contact with the officer to make the updates to his registry, but he failed to do so, so the additional charge was filed. Since he had already been convicted of a sex offender registry violation, this was his second offense, raising the violation to a class D felony.
