Man Taken To Hospital After Close Call With SUV

Sheldon, Iowa – A Sheldon man was injured when his personal mobility scooter had a close call with an SUV near Shopko in Sheldon early Thursday afternoon.

Sheldon Police say the incident took place shortly after 1 pm Thursday, when a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 18-year-old Lexie Cox of Sheldon, was leaving the Shopko parking lot, trying to get onto Highway 18.  Officers say Cox failed to stop for a personal mobility scooter, operated by 57-year old Douglas Nonneman of Sheldon, which was westbound on the sidewalk in front of the Shopko store.

Authorities say Nonneman was transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team, for treatment of what were described as “minor” injuries.

Police estimate damage to Cox’s Equinox at $1-thousand.  No damage estimate for Nonneman’s scooter was available.

Sheldon Police were assisted at the scene by SCAT, the Sheldon Fire Company, and Sheldon Emergency Management Agency.
