Melvin Man To Serve More Than Two Years In Federal Prison

Melvin, Iowa — A Melvin man who pled guilty to a federal narcotics-related charge back in September will be spending some time in a federal prison.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office in Sioux City, 50-year-old Todd Gruis pled guilty to possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Gruis was sentenced earlier this week in federal district court in Sioux City.

At hearings in the case, authorities say evidence showed that in early 2021 Gruis and a Minnesota man purchased methamphetamine via the “dark web” on multiple occasions. The meth was purchased by the Minnesota man who would have the packages sent to Gruis’ home in Melvin. Once Gruis received the packages, the two would coordinate to split the meth in half.

Gruis was sentenced to 31-months in federal prison and must serve a 2-year term of supervised release following imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.

Prosecutors say the case was investigated by United States Postal Inspection Service, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
